Application 014: Automotive industry MG, United Kingdom

MG sports cars are once again in production at Longbridge in Birmingham and to increase the pick rate of small components in the company’s Logistics Centre, MG has installed an innovative new range of dynamic carton live shelving by Interroll. By modifying existing racking at the facility, project leader and designer LINPAC Storage Systems, the leading UK racking and shelving manufacturer, has provided a cost efficient solution. It maximises the space utilisation and ensures a higher concentration of small parts ready for line-side picking.

Carton Flow

Carton Flow

Carton Flow
The dynamic shelving transports the boxes of MG components on pitched roller tracks, automatically replenishing the pick face with a full carton as soon as the empty one has been removed. Appropriately designed pick faces for manual picking can increase accuracy as well as productivity, presenting the product to the picker in an easily accessible manner to ergonomically optimise the pick process. In fact, the installed carton live shelving is an improved Interroll solution, launched in February 2009, which opens up all sectors of industry to unlimited possibilities for creating both the physical and logistical ultimate in design of customised picking areas.  That is exactly why the application at the MG Logistics Centre features unique wheel tracks to ensure ease of carton flow and new boltless carton live beds that reduce installation time by up to 30% and increase picking performance by up to 65%.

What our customers say
LINPAC and Interroll offered us good quality carton live product at a competitive price that fitted into the bottom of the existing racking bays. Because of the economic climate MG Motor has been in a stand down situation but now we are ramping up our production dramatically.  This means that we are a growing organisation within the UK with a commitment to constantly look for ways to improve our manufacturing methods and work processes for our workforce.
This year we are launching two new derivatives of our sports car which has meant that we have more small components in stock.  These parts are now stored in the carton live shelving, ensuring that picking is done in the most efficient and safest way."
